Diagnostics of Ignition Reactions
The ignition of hydrocarbon combustion is generally controlled by
chemical processes: the buildup of reactive free radical species under
relatively cool conditions, and the heating of the fuel and oxidant
gases through exothermic reactions. Under sponsorship from the Gas
Research Institute (GRI), SRI studied natural gas ignition chemistry
through laser diagnostic measurements, kinetic studies, and flame
modeling. Noteworthy are the laser detection methods for the CH,
CH2 and HCO radicals developed on this project.
